I used it last night to make a handle for an antique hammer head. https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-handle-for-...
I have a similar unit that I use to de-bawl branches to brand walking and hiking sticks. I'g going to incorporate a couple of y'all ideas into it to meliorate information technology. Thank you!
This the beginning time I've heard of or seen this tool. Crawly!
thanks for an interesting instructable, and may your tools never rust.
Well done! I have wanted one of these ever since watching one used at a Arts and crafts fair. Seeing the long forest shavings wing off of a slice of rough stock as the depict knife worked the woods, was really cool. Now by using 2 X four construction I tin finally afford to build 1! Thanks.
What is it? what does it do?
It is a horizontal clamp for belongings wood while you work it with manual tools.
Some examples are to rough shape green wood earlier using on a lathe. Making spokes for wagon wheels. Chair legs and slats. Squaring up or rounding woods with a drawknife or spokeshave. Pretty much whatever awarding where you would want both easily free while holding a workpiece that will be moved often.
Nether NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU Use A Ability SAW, OR DRILL WITH A SHAVE Equus caballus. If your tool slips and you hit ane of the two femoral arteries in your thighs you lot are expressionless, no ER no Paramedics yous drain out very speedily. Even so gently shaving is generally safe. Keep your tool sharp and use a calorie-free touch.
I wish I had read your second paragraph before starting to work on my piece with a power saw... arghgghghh! (bleeds out)
Hey thank you for posting your concluding words.
Oh I encounter at present, it souds usefull, thanks.
Yer welcome. It is one of those odd tools that actually helps seeing information technology in use. Cause at starting time it merely looks like something a cowboy could use to practice roping... or a torture device.... or a really cumbersome newspaper weight.
I had no idea such a thing existed, but I could see it being useful for shaping guitar/musical instrument necks.
Very nicely done. Thanks for sharing.
Simply curious what the largest round it can handle? Looks similar around 6-8 inches...
Rough idea on weight limits for that clamp?
I sometimes shave bark off some big logs then...
Notwithstanding slap-up idea for smaller stuff.
:D
Right now almost half dozen inches is the max on that Due to the width of the acme clench (4 5/8"). I am on the lookout for some longer half inch wagon bolts I Figure if I tin can find a 12" bolt I will accept to make a second lower jaw and wider top clamp with spacers for the pivot block. I was limited to the longest commodities the Hardware stores sold locally at 8"
After making the Hammer handle last dark I would actually like to be able to shave wider planks it was only too fun starting with basically firewood and carving out a useful production. https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-handle-for-an-Antique-BFH/
And afterwards talking to the maintenance guy to run across if he had longer bolts, he solved my width problem. He said Hey why non use all thread and 2 basics and washers.... ( had to confront palm ) the solution was simple and logical and so ofcourse I was trying to over retrieve it. I already take the nuts and washers now I just need to pick up i/2 inch threaded rod.
Sweet! Very Nice Job MoTinkerGNome. Wanting to make a shaving horse for a long time at present but finding a long thick plank ordinarily used for the seat hasn't been piece of cake. Your structure method is brilliant making apply of scraps & easy to obtain pieces. Once this snow is gone I'one thousand going to enjoy making one.
Great thought, many Cheers for posting.
That was what was property me back likewise. Then when edifice my work bench/cart I was like hey I bet a couple 2 by 4's would work got to banging together and Information technology worked.
It's a "Bodger"
Very nice piece of equipment and well made!
Thank you sir.
This is i of the most elegant tools using utility materials I've seen. Mating stick lumber with the praying mantis design results in a satisfying outcome. Impressive.
I'm thinking well-nigh tweaking your pattern into a jaw horse.
